This rare earth magnet is helpful in checking for base metal (non-precious metals containing nickel or iron) items. Most items attracted by a magnet will not only contain little/no precious metal but most refiners will not accept them when you want to sell gold or silver. Neodymium magnets are brittle and can be broken or can splinter in a collision. One should wear gloves and protective glasses when handling these magnets.
